Should I inject my DD lump or not?

I have been getting mixed reports about Kenalog injection in my DD lump on my palm. Some say it works well, others caution against it.

I have a Dr. visit in a week and would like to gather as much information as I can.

Joe:

Dr. Denkler supplemented my N.A. last August with injections of Kennalog.

I see Dr. D. as a superstar in this area, & give great weight to his opinion.

By the way, I do think that the injections slowed down the progression of Dups in both of my hands.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

My appointment is soon to see the local hand specialist and I'm still concerned that injecting my small lump could make things worse. Since I am in a retirement area with a generally older population, I'm thinking this local hand specailist has never seen an early case of DD as mine and only has experience with advanced cases requiring surgery. This may also mean they will do nothing, I'm not sure. And trying to get this information before the visit is next to impossible.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

I saw the hand specialist yesterday and after much discussion, I was talked out of an injection. Doc said that there is no conclusive evidence that Kenalog, although she heard of it, slows down the progression. As I mentioned in my previous post, we are in an area of retirees and I'm sure she sees much worse cases, so my little lump with no contraction off the finger must seem minor.

So where do I go now. It does seem to be getting worse as the lump is larger and hurts more when the finger is stretched or the lump is pressed. There is also a little raised line extending from the lump towards the wrist.

She did mention Collagenase as a possibility when it is released.

Here are some pics of my hand. http://kineoptics.com/stuff.html

What is the Downside?

It would seem that NA practitioners are more likely to use Kennalog than others. NA does nothing to elevate Nodules not in proximity to a ruptured cord, so at least Kennalog can be added to the protocol. I am unaware of significant studies supporting or undermining this practice.

My own personal experience was positive. The injections after NA defiantly diminished or eliminated certain Nodules. However, other Nodules in different arias have arisen to take their place. (This is *not* the case on my surgically treated hand. There are *no* new Nodules. The hand is stiff and *painful* and heck as a result of OS, but at least no new Nodules :-)

My NA hand is been fairly stable for over two years after NA or I'd defiantly find someone willing to do more Kennalog. I don't see a downside.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

I have heard that messing with DD can accelerate the progress. Is this a fact? I was cautioned against stretching or heavy rubbing of the nodule.

Could the docs be scared of injections due to this?

I have not had anything done to my DD, and as you can see, it is in it's early stages.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

In over three years on the BioS Forum and here, I know of no report that injections exasperated the problem.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

I just assumed that so it's good to hear there is no problem reported.

So what should I do?

Did you look at my pics of my hand?

Is it worth going to see another Doc to get an injection? Wait for the Collagenase? Rub it? Heat it? Bang it? Feed it?

As you can see I don't like waiting for it to get worse to get treated.

Re: Should I inject my DD lump or not?

Joe,

Do not over traumatize you hands. I triggered my disease by playing congas way too hard. There are conflicting reports on the effect of stretching. Radiation seems to be working well for those for whom it is available (Europe). Some CHS are proponents of ongoing Kennalog injections. Most are not. I say, what the heck. Go for it.

Collegenase is years off and even then it just does the same thing as NA, which is available now in the US.
