Specialist in Brisbane
Hi
I'm new to the group and have only recently been diagnosed with DT. I'd like to do whatever I can to avoid progression of the disease. NA sounds good once the contraction starts, and I'd be willing to go to Paris (as I plan to go there this year anyway). I've read the posts on the Australian NA thread.
but radiation therapy might be what I'm after for the early stages.
Can anybody recommend experts/specialists in Brisbane (Australia)?
I might need a surgeon or radiologist but perhaps a rheumatologist would also be worth seeing?

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Australia Calling.Adelaide. Hi Alanm. Up to a couple of years ago Radiotherapy for the early treatment Dupuytren was basically unheard of in Australia. After my treatment in Germany I tried to spread the word here but RT in Australia had been used to treat cancer patients and most medical staff are overworked. Another forum member from Queensland tried to find an oncologist but to no avail. There are only two listings on this site for Australia. I did speak with Dr Borg here in Adelaide and he has treated patients for non malignant disorders including Dupuytrens. You could try the Govt. Hospitals but you need to be well informed on the protocol and bring the info along to the oncologist.( All available on this site.) One other factor to consider is age. You did not mention it. Try Googling in Brisbane to find any Oncologist who have an interest in the treatment of Benign diseases. Regards

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Hi alanm I thank you for you age diclosure. I myself would not be happy to have RT. under the age of 40. Yr. on the hands. The risk factor at your age is not a factor to worry about. You mentioned that you might be off to Paris this coming year. The idea of having NA.would only apply once there is contracture. Remember that the disease is different for all of us except that recontracture will occur once you start the intervention either by surgery or needle, but to what extent nobody can tell. Why not call in and see Prof. Seegenschmiedt . He is an expert. See Germany at the same time. You mentioned that you did not have contracture. This disease generally is slow in progression for most. In some cases the disease goes into remission for years for some patients. Should you consider seeing Prof. Seegenschmiedt you could undergo the first session of RT depending if the Prof. considers RT is an option and have the 2nd session back in Australia. Regards.

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Alanm I am also a recently diagnosed victim and am 50 years old. I visited a DR David Christie at Southport on the Gold Coast several months ago. David is a radiation oncologist.
David has not treated anyone for the disease previously and was not aware of RT as a treatment for the disease until I advised him about this site. This made me a little pensive about going ahead with the treatment.
I am about to book in the RT with David Christie so I cannot vouch for him however I have medical friends who I trust who speak very highly of him.
He works under the Premion cancer care group. They have offices in Brisbane and their collective phone number is 1300 135 727
I also spoke to the fellow in Adelaide who is listed on this site. Once again he was a gentleman and advised me that I should be able to achieve the same result by visiting David Christie rather then travelling to Adelaide.
If you like you can wait for me to be the guinea pig and I will advise you on the results of the treatment.
I am tired of watching the lumps grow larger on my hand and not being able to do something about it - so I have now made up my mind to have RT.
regards
Paul M

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Hi Paul M. I'd like to trial RT so would be most interested to see how you go. I'm happy for you to tell your RT specialist that there is at least another person (me) who would like to undergo treatment also.

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Good to hear the word is spreading here in Australia.
I'm also pursuing RT (for Lederhosen) and if these conditions were more widely understood by primary health care practitioners (i.e. GPs and podiatrists) I would have been in a better position to act earlier
All the best with your RT

Re: Specialist in Brisbane
Hi Everyone,
I have been following the discussion re Brisbane, I am more than interested, both for Lederhosen and DC.
Have had left hand NA three times, Twice from Dr Eaton, once from Dr David Smith in Victoria (successful to a point, BUT he administered a total block and my fingers were numb for 6 months and hence somewhat reluctant to go through that again) and also my Right hand once by Dr Eaton. Lederhosen is also a nuisance on both feet (three nodules left foot, two on right foot), so if there is any practitioners for RT in Brisbane I will certainly be interested. Left hand starting to look as if it will need another NA/treatment of some sort, ruing finger back to about 25-30 %, right hand has remained stable now for 6 years. Male, 57 years old other than that very fit.
Have posted previously in the old forum, glad to see this forum is well and truly alive!

Consider to get a careful first assessment for both your feet prior to any radiotherapy being done by an unexperienced radiologist. I really can recommend the German treatment schedule of 5 x 3Gy in 2 radiation series which was applied in my case by Prof. Seegenschmiedt, who is a very skilled clinician ... I am glad to live in Germany but I know that quite a few people travel to the "prof" to get a start-up evaluation !
All the best for your upcoming treatment, Larry

This is really complete nonsense : To be a guinea pig requires several years !
I can't believe that you hand over your only feet or hands you have to an unexperienced doctor whom YOU have convinced to do the treatment he has not known before !! He might be nice ... but he does not even know the outcome and has never seen an outcome of another patient ...
So how could he assess the appropriate "target area", administer the "correct dose" and make the appropriate evaluation ...
I would only trust an expereinced physician with 10 year experience in all aspects mentioned above. I was glad to have been treated by Prof. Seegenschmiedt formerly in Essen, but now in Hamburg.
So make the good choices and hopefully imkprove in your status, Larry
