Surgery on Jul 18

I'm scheduled for surgery on Jul 18 and I'm really scared. Can anyone help me deal with this fear> I need to get it under control prior to surgery. Thanks. Carol

Re: Surgery on Jul 18

Carol,
Generally, you will feel none, or very little pain from the surgery. My surgeon gave me a prescription for pain, just in case. Then he said that very few of his patients experienced pain to use the prescription. I took three Advil on a couple of four hour cycles and then took two after that for a couple of days (just in case).

Post surgery is very important. I went to a hand therapist twice after the surgery. The first time to get a splint molded for my hand and the second time to get exercises. If a person does the stretching exercises all during the day it is very helpful for proper healing. Just flexing the hand as much as possible during the day really helps. Making a fist and releasing. The best advice the surgeon gave me was to never let the wound dry out. That means 24 hours a day. I always had a good hand lotion available at all times. Usually, I would rub the lotion into the incision every two hours. The messaging is important to break down scar tissue (just like the flexing).

My hand (6 years after surgery) is as good as it was prior to Dupuytren's. I feel that the reason for this success was a very good surgeon and the post surgery exercise/care.

Don't take advil pre-op with out talking to your physician. It is a nonsteroidal that can increase bleeding. Most physicians want you off the whole class for some days pre-op. Ask your surgeon what is safe to take before. You might also ask for your pain script ahead of time so it is filled and waiting for you. Pain management today recommends takeing meds by the clock for the first couple doses even if you don't think you need them to stay ahead of the pain. Finally keep that hand elevated at all times. Preventing swelling works better than meds. Pain managment is a real priority in medicine today Talk to your doc. You'll do just fine.

Doctor Colleen,
Thank you for the clarification. I didn't mean to leave the impression that I took Advil prior to surgery.

Re: Surgery on Jul 18

I can confirm that hand surgery ( i have had 3) and all different surgeons is very un-painful. I was given a prescription for pain killers each time and hardly needed any of them. The hardest time will be a month or so afterwards when basic healing has occurred but you hand is stiff and might still seem bent or unable to flex and you wonder if you made the right decision. but not to worry, the physical therapy or exercises prescribed by your surgeon will help a lot.

I was also worried about anesthetic and nausea from previous experience. Not a problem. anesthesias are better than ever and they can give you stuff if this might be an issue. Hope your procedure goes well.
