Re: Dupuytren's on palm between thumb and index finger

Nicki; To add to what the others have said DD in women is not as rare as many medical Practitioners think. I am a 58 year old male but I know almost as many women with the disease as I do men. 2 of the women I know are unrelated to me and developed DD in their late 50's. Now in their 70's these women have both had surgery.

In addition my sister, who is in her 40's, has DD in one had. It has not progressed since first appearing so she has so far had no treatment.

If you develop DD in the other hand, or elsewhere on the hand that has had surgery you might like to consider Needle Aponeurotomy (NA). It is quick and relatively painless and only takes 20-30 minutes under very local anesthetic.

Your surgeon will tell you that the disease can come back after NA. The reality is it can come back after surgery or NA but it seems to reappear more often after NA. I have had both NA and surgery and the condition seems to return regardless of what I do.

With NA you can repeat the treatment as often as necessary whereas with surgery there is a limit.

Hi Seph,

I will definately try NA if I have to, how mant times did you have surgery? This seems to take so long to heal.

Re: Dupuytren's on palm between thumb and index finger

Nicki; I had surgery once on my left hand because I knew no better. 3 days in hospital but took a long time to heal and I wasn't prepared to do all the physio sessions so I ended up with a less than satisfactory result for my little finger.

I didn't know about NA and wasn't given any alternatives at the time. With the knowledge I have now I would never have had the surgery. NA is so simple, quick and inexpensive or would be if I lived in Europe. In reality I live in Australia so I need to add a couple of 24 hour flights and a few hotel rooms to my cost. Then again it gives me an excuse to travel to Europe and this weekend I will be at Twickenham to see the All Blacks sort out England. I will be the guy wearing the splint following an NA procedure in Paris last Friday.

I will then be in Paris the following Friday to get NA on my left hand before heading home.

You must be trying to make me feel better! Good luck with everything. I was in surgery for over an hour, out patient, wish I had more info too.

There are other valid opinions. I would have surgery rather than NA or Xiaflex. My surgery took one hour and 11 years later I have zero recurrence. I had very little pain. I did therapy myself. It was little finger contracted over 90 degrees.

Re: Dupuytren's on palm between thumb and index finger

I'm glad you had a good experience, I think having surgery on the index finger, and also having arthritis in those knuckles, makes it difficult bending and being painless...but it gets better as time goes on, thank you for your response.
