Overuse of Hands

I'm new to this forum, and am thankful for all the information on it. Do any of you know if you using hands too much, makes Dupuytrens progress faster?

Re: Overuse of Hands

Welcome to our forum, Rose! It's a simple question but difficult to answer. I believe medical experts agree that a damage to the hand may trigger Dupuytren's for those who are likely to get Dupuytren's anyway due to genetic reasons https://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuyt...ure_trauma.html. Whether heavy use of the hand accelerates existing Dupuytren's is even more difficult to answer.

I recall a guy on this forum who used to play bongo drums and was pretty sure that this accelerated his Dupuytren's. Dupuytren himself also believed that this disease is caused by chronic local trauma and can be occupation related.

There’s no history of this in my family, and I’m a pianist. I’m thinking the many years of piano has played a role in this. Thank you for the info!

I’m a late adult beginner-intermediate player several years now, who started after my first DD diagnosis. I practice daily but probably a lot less than a professional. My hand dexterity has slowly improved over these last years despite growth of nodules and cords. I have had RT. I also play a lot of tennis without any problems. But I have had acute problems caused by mishandling (auto) mechanic and garden tools that caused trauma. You do hear from quite a few piano players, guitar players, etc but that may be because they want the solution to keep on playing?

Yes, I want to continue doing as much as I can, and yet, don’t want to overdo to make it progress further.
