long surgery recovery

Has anyone had such a long recovery time as this?:

Left pinkie PIP was at 45 degrees corrected to 15. Now 14 months post op.

I'm still gaining flexibility and the swelling is continuing to abate. In the morning I start all over again with a two fingers fairly stiff and unable to come even close to the palm. By the afternoon my pinkie can touch the palm, but then it still takes effort to straighten fingers back out. The only reason I don't assume that I'm now paretically crippled is that after soaking in warm water in the evenings I can get about 90% range of motion. There is still swelling in the fingers that weren't operated on. However I have a 3" scar from one side of my palm to the other and the "pulleys" deep in the hand are still swollen and stiff as I open and close the hand.

I've now been told I'm "off the chart" in terms of recovery time. Obviously it's all my fault for bring this difficult hand to my surgeon, though I suspect the fact that he decide to have his second try using the "open palm" or "Mccash" approach may have caused more trauma than the standard. (I had no stitches for the 3" opening accost my palm which was needed to "clean out" the Dups tissue.)

Now I've been told that, though I should get an award for hanging in there, I should **stop** daily hand exercises because that's making things worse. Gee, previous to this my hand therapist kept telling me I was doing a great job!

Am I the only one that is gong to take 18 to 24 months to heal?

Yes. My recovery lasted at least a year and a half. It was extremely painful. I would be reluctant to do it again, even though I have new knots in my palm.

Not just Celtic

Two years now since surgery, my hand is great. Recovery took about 6 months with plenty of exercising which, I feel, is vital.

Thanks for the reply.

Was it **swelling** that delayed your recovery? If I could just maintain the range of motion I can achieve during stretching I'd be good. But the swelling creates so much stiffness and pain. In the morning 2 out of 4 fingers are still useless
