HANDS

Hi Peggy.
I am a fellow Californian..I have posted that I watched this site for a little over a year until DOCTOR FOR U.S. arrived...I lef the puter in Dec. got back on in April and saw some posts about Dr. Eaton....I emailed fellow sufferer...Jerry..who said... GET ON THAT PLANE AND STOP TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAUSED THIS???? Thank God for Jerilib.....I made my reservation for May ... got my ticket.. and I am afraid to fly...and off I went.
I even told Dr. Eaton that I drove by his office the day before to see if it was a clinic or some kind of a dump..lol
Anyway.. went in on friday..May 21st. had the left hand done I had a curvature of 80% in pinkie.... approximately 20 minutes later after a short consultation with Dr. Eaton..in which he asked if I had any other questions and I replied..Nope... Let's get this over with...
I came out with a pinkie at 30%...curvature... the joint is not letting it release at this time... and I had some hardening of skin tissue... he didn't want to force it because he didn't want to cause a split in skin....just a local anesthetic....1 celebrex and an ice patch...4 little bitty bandages..as he clipped other places in hand that cords were hardened....went back the 21st...monday and had the right hand done....completely different... pitt in the middle of palm that was just starting the pucker and pull hand up...not being able to lay completely flat on table...
well, 30 minutes later after snipping pitts and a few places my hand grew 5/8/ of an inch in spreading... I can lay completelyflat on table.....
I have medicare...so medicare paid 80 % which left me with a balance of approximately 110 dollars on right hand and 80 on left.
Cost was plane tocket and hotel and food. We wtayed a little onger and made a vacation of it...There was no pain at all... I went out the minute I got out of his office and went sight seeing with a frozen bottle of water in my hand...I HIGHLY SUGGEST GOING....I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID NOT HAVE TRADITIONAL SURGERY.....I am returning to Eaton in about 6 months for a check up and have cords that are hardened clipped....if that is necessary.
He is extremely easy to talk to and talks to you the whole time he is snipping...answers all of your questions....
DO NOT BE SCARED........I missed the post that says what condition your hands are in...Good Luck and do not have traditional surgery......SEE EATON..May or after is cheaper because of hotel rates........

2nd NA in 2 months

Well I just returned from having NA with Dr Eaton after the procedure from July 2nd failed after 4 weeks with my contracture completely returned and a bit worse even at 40 deg vs 30 last time. He did a bit more work than last time and the hand feels better 24hrs after than it did last time when I couldn't quite open the hand fully without some pain. It's flat now and no pain other than residual from having the procedure. I'm optimistic it won't come back this time for a lot longer and am taking colchicine as a precaution. Will keep forum updated on my unusual progress.

On my thumb to index cords, he said they could be treated but wouldn't until I am functionally impaired rather than just losing some span in my grip as it is now.

Wish me luck!

Steve

Re: 2nd NA in 2 Mos

Hey Steve
I hope it takes this time! I go back to Dr Eaton in October after having NA with him in July. (First session reduced my pinkie contracture from 145 degrees down to 85 degrees). I hope to get it flat after the next session.
Did Dr Eaton prescribe that medication? I note that it is usually used for gout control. It also carries warnings about its use by the elderly (Alas I think I may have made it to that category!) which makes me more prone to opt for repeated NA sessions if DC returns rather than preventative medicine.
Wishing you the best of luck with your new flat hand!

colchcine

Good luck. I'm only 32 so luckily so those warnings aren't a problem for me on colchicine. Yes, Dr Eaton prescribed it but I ran it by my GP and got his OK too. Some studies showed it had a little benefit so I just hope it slows my disease progression down.

Ready to make appointment

Thanks Linda. I am happy your procedure turned out so well. I don't know how to describe my hand but my little finger has started to curl, my hand has started to thicken and I can't lay my hand flat on the table. I can see one cord from the base of my little finger and one just forming from the base of my middie finger. I sent an email with pics of my hand to Dr. Eaton's office and received a reply in less than 24 hours. They said I as a good candidate for the NA. They said that they are setting appointments 30 days out right now. I am very encouraged and ready to make my appointment. I too don't like flying, but I am ready to go now, but have decided to wait until February or March, of next year. A friend has agreed to fly back there with me, and we are considering taking a cruise out of Florida to Panama Canal back to California. Kinda of like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Now, you have to admit, I wouldn't be able to do that if I had the standard surgery. I am hoping my medicare and supplement will cover most of the medical expenses, but if not, I don't care!

I sure wish everyone with DD would find out about NA before they have their hand cut open.

wanted to add my 2 cents worth

See my posting tonight on "Dr. Eaton" listing on the Forum topics...so I don't have to retype and tax my newly released hand!

unfortunate news

Well, the redo I had two weeks ago started to regress last week...45 to 0 to 20 I would estimate now. Hopefully the colchicine might start kicking in to stop it from going all the way back to 45 but it better start soon. Looks like NA is not the savior for everyone but worth a shot at least.

Why any other surgeon ?

Also sorry to hear that Steve. You should try to speak to Dr Eaton. Not that he might be able to do something but since this is a relatively new procedure for him the feedback might help someone else.
