Was turned Down by Dr. Eaton

Just want to let you all know what was up with me. I had surgry back in the late 80's and it was a long recovery, and the pain immince, and scaring was prominet.

The DC came back with vengence and has almsot closed my left hand.I have seen many Othopedic surgens since the dc has returned and have been told by them to wait for a non surgical method, ie Collansse or NA. Well as you all know we haven't seen the Collanasse treatment open to the public, and have been told we won't until they find funding.Due to the lack of a poster spokesman for or cause.
So I tried all of the NA contacts here in the states, and have been told that I am not a canadate for NA because of the scaring from the previous Surgry. Dr Eaton said sorry I can't help you, You will need to have surgry.. So did the other Dr's.
So to make a long story short the NA procedure is not a cure all for all. I would recomend to you that are thinking surgry don't, do the NA first not second.
I am looking at a very long recovery time which will include skin grafs and the possability of more than one operation.

Treatment by Eaton

Bruce,
I am sorry to hear that you cannot have D,C. Hopefully someone, somewhere will eventually find something for us.
It has really been such a short time when there was no doctor in the U.S. for the D.C. procedure..
Good Luck to you

NA FINALLY!!

Dear Bruce,

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. Many of us are hoping the next generations of DC sufferers will not have to go through experiences like yours as NA becomes mainstream. Please let us know how everything turns out for you.

Take care and God Bless,

Frances

NA FINALLY!!

My Oct. appointment was scheduled in July and due to the hurricane, rescheduled for last week. Although at least one of my fingers had worsened in that time period, I had a very successful visit. On Thursday, Dr. Eaton performed NA on my pinky finger and my ring finger on my right hand. The pinky went from 80degrees to 30 degreed, better than average I was told. My ring finger went from 30 to straight. There was a little pain with the numbing, but not at all unbearable(and I am a VERY big wimp!) I expected to return on Friday for my left hand, but Dr. Eaton did 2 cortisone shots in it instead. I was fitted for a splint to wear on my right hand at night for 3 months. He said that since my hand had not hardened, it was possible that my finger might straighten even more. I was very pleased and Dr. Eaton and staff were all as nice as everyone had reported. I showed a retired Dr. who had done hand surgery for DU patients and he was amazed! Not a long explanation, but I would be glad to answer any questions if needed. I would do this again in a minute over surgery....can't imagine the comparison! Sherry

PIP Vs MCP

Thanks for the report Sherry. I'm going to guess that your pinkie that went from 80 to 30 was the *PIP* joint (second from palm). It's always harder to straighten than the MPC (next to the palm). According to Eaton's web site, the average straightening of a PIP is 50%, which in your case would have been to 40 degrees. And the ring finger from 30 to 0. Was that A PIP also?

What we are seeing from reading these posts is that if you are going to go the NA route, do it ASAP. The sooner you do it, the better results.

MCP

Randy - No, The joints affected were both MCP, if that's closest to the palm. I guess I was confused, because I thought that was the more difficult to straighten. Dr. Eaton said that the improvement on my pinky was better than expected. Yes, I wish I had gone sooner...........but thought I was waiting for it to get worse so that I could have traditional surgery. At least I found out about NA before that! Sherry

when NA

Without having experience with NA myself, I think Randy is right. The probability that NA helps decreases with the stage of the disease. According to www.dupuytren.org the odds are

RESULTS STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4
GOOD 92,6 % 77,7 % 71,2 % 56,5 %
BAD 7,4 % 22,3 % 28,8 % 43,5 %

If you look at the "excellent" results alone, the relation is even more obvious:

Result STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4
Excellent 79,7 % 41,6 % 23,6 % 9,2 %

The message is clear: don't wait too long, have NA latest at 90 degrees, better at 45 or 30.
