Yoga practitioners out there?

I started getting Dupuytrens lumps in my right hand a few months ago plus I have a detectable chord. So far, no detectable loss of functionality.

I'm a youthful 61 year old in otherwise good health. I had been doing yoga for several years before this emerged.

As other yoga practitioners know, there are positions which BOTH put heavy pressure on the palms of the hands AND REALLY STRETCH the fingers straight at the same time!

I surmise that many people associate the triggering of Duputrens with some trauma to the hand.

On the other hand, I remember another yoga student commenting that if she didn't do her yoga regularly, she couldn't keep her fingers from bending in a lot. (This was perhaps 6 months before my symptoms began, but I am guessing she had D.C.).

In a recent yoga class I tried shifting weight off my lower palms to where my fingers join upper palm. Within several days I had a new little lump right under where my 3rd finger joins the palm. Yikes!!!

Any other yoga folks have comments about benefits/risks of positions which pressure palms and also stretch fingers? Might extra padding help? Or readjusting positions? Have you kept your practice up but modified it? Have you quit altogether? Etc. etc. Any feedback would be great!

Bikram is a Money Hungry Fraud

Dear Susie Q

Unfortunately we have a troll on this forum who steals peoples nicknames and makes posts. I have never done yoga so ignore this person - but if you read through this forum there is legit info about yoga and DC.

Good luck

yoga-helpful hinderhance

I have been doing yoga for about 4 years and have definitely notice problems this past year and things have been heating up in the hand department at the same time.

I have vowed this week to cut out downdag, plank and other hand stretching positions unitl I can modify them. Using handle like things isn't good as the pressue on the cords is very bad. putting the hands into fists doesn't provide god support so it is either elbow positons like the dolphin variant of down dog, or none aat all for me.

I haven't tolkd my yoga instructor yet, but she will just have to deal wiht it, it is my practice after all.

Yoga

I have Dupuytren's disease in both hands. I live in San Jose. I took my first yoga class at a Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury yoga teacher last night. They heat the room to 103 and we do all kinds of stretching. After I warmed up my bent fingers got loose and they straightened out. They contracted again after I cooled off, but I was happy to see them straighter for a while.

Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury

I must say that the teacher of yoga in Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury's school has helped me quite a bit. My hands are much more flexable now. I do not know about Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury being a crook. I have never met him. I just go to a class with his name on it. I recommend yoga for stiff hands.

Yoga

I took a class from a teacher of Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury's school. It hurt to extend my fingers. My bent fingers did not become straight. I quit because it hurt too much.
