Ledderhose therapy

Hi Fiona,
Have you thought of contacting your local PCT for info on your queries?

Ledderhose therapy

I have DD for which I have had 2 surgeries, moderately succesful. I also have Lederhose, which is giving me no trouble at this point.

The first and most important bit of advice I have to offer is - do NOT consider surgery for DD unless/until you have a serious functional impairment. And then, DO consider needle aponevrotomy first, and surgery only if NA cannot be done in your case.

The second bit of advice is - do NOT have surgery for Lederhose under any circumstances, regardless of what your doctors may say. It is seldom successful, recurrence is often very quick, and the condition becomes worse than before the surgery.

Ledderhose therapy

Fiona, unfortunately I haven't heard of any successful therapy of knuckle pads but for the lump on your foot cryotherapy might possibly help. Cryotherapy has been in use for a long time, somtimes it is also called cryo surgery but they don't cut into the flesh. For Ledderhose it has hardly been used so far and I don't want to promote this therapy, it is still experimental. But you can follow a trial in Yahoo's plantarfibromatosis group. I believe the instrument's manufacturer Cryostar is still onwed by the British Oxygen Company and you might find a doctor through the vendor.

In cryotherapy the lump is frozen to a very low temperature, which kills the cells, including the connected nerve ends. This is meant to reduce the pain and downsize the "nodule", too.

If you want to learn more about this therapy you can start with the cryotherapy thread on this forum or with www.dupuytren-online.info.

Wolfgang
PS: I fully agree with what jim h posted regarding surgery, NA, Dupuytren, and Ledderhose!

1 Year to the Day

I had a knuckle pad removed as part of a contracture surgery. It didn't come back but I later developed them on several other fingers. They may hurt a bit initiallly but eventually the inflammation seems to go away and they cause no problem. They are not worth the trouble of surgical removal.

Hi Fiona,
Sorry to hear that the PCT could not help. Most people in the UK are in the dark about Dupuytrens. I don't know anything about the knuckle pads but if you want to email Dr Lermusiaux in Paris he may be able to help you. He is the one I go to to have my treatment. jllermusiaux@club-internet.fr May be a waste of time but worth a try.
