S.S.Disability and Dupuytren/Ledderhose Disease

I was interviewed by a social security disability representative as per my request to apply for benifits due to this juvenile DC/LD dis-ease that had grown so much my toes wouldnt even touch the ground when I stood on my feet. The Man on the phone said that he hadn't heard of DC or LD and it wasnt a recognized disabling condition. So He said if I gave him more info about myself I may still qualify for benifits, so He began asking me more questions. He got to the "weight" section of His criteria list, and I told him I weighed 330 lbs, I believe it was at. He said He could get me disability for that alone, being 100lbs or more overweight is called morbidly obese and it was on His list of qualifications. I told him I was overweight due to the agressive form of Ledderhose Disease. I felt ashamed and I was shocked to find out I could get assistance due to a result of this unforgiving disease. I was in fact accepted, and am still on S.S.D. to this day. If I didnt have it, I would be in the streets, or dead, and that's just a cold hard fact.

I'm sorry your over weight it must hell for you.
I'm in the health profession and can relate to hundreds of stories people give to explain away their obesity. Only a very minor percentage of these people had a comorbid condition which prevented weight loss.
Ledderhose even in it's grossest debilitating form does not cause obesity. Obesity is mostly caused by eating in excess of ones energy output. If you are highly restricted in phyiscal exercise then you must embark on a dietry intake that equates with your circumstances.
It appears you are 'justifing' your excessive weight by blaming Ledderhose. Unfortunately most, but not all, obese people have some excuse for their condition. You may be a candidate for kidney disease, heart and diabetes and then you will be disabled and it will irreversible.
Take charge of your own condition and circumstances.

To Troy or Troi

as I acknowledged your situation is regretful and is serious. Serious enough to address issues and outcomes some of which may sound harsh to you. If you don't address your situation it will get even worse. Some factors harming your health you can do something about albiet with a huge effort.
"3 meals a day with no exercise = weight gain"!!
Well 3 SMALL meals having a calorific intake equal to your calorific output = NO WEIGHT GAIN. Put in broad terms to gain weight you have to be putting more in your mouth than is necessary. The body converts the excess calories into fat storage and if this goes on unchecked it eventualy puts organs under stress.
As I have said I have had long term Health and Obesity experience and I'm used to Obese patients being in denial or, if challenged, being quite aggressively defensive about their state of affairs.

Bob my friend, you were definately harsh. Troy and eveyone else in the world knows about the food ratio thing, so voicing it was patronizing....plain and simple.

Since you obviously have trouble understanding the psychology of overeating ... let me explain a little. Troy did with food what many people do with other things... some drink to much alcohol, some smoke to many cigarettes, others excersise till their body sustains lifetime injuries. It's all the same really. It's getting lost in a habit.

Troy realized this behaviour was adversly affecting his health and life... changed.... then posted his story. Personally I think it's one of triumph and humanity which brings hope and joy to my heart. When I hear how people meet life head on....and win...it makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

After all....I've got fourteen and a half years of sobriety myself and can totally relate to everything he said.
