Shifting Fingers

Does DC cause your fingers to shift posistion? I'm not sure if I have DC or not, but I had pain in the bottom of my right hand - way below my pinkie finger. The pain would come when I pressed to hard, but it went away after a couple of weeks. My hands and feet started itching a couple of months ago - like an itching sensation under the skin. That stopped after a month or so, but then I started noticing my fingers shifting and my hand changing shape. Both of hands are affected, but more so in my right hand. My knuckles seem to buckle at the middle joint and I have bony nodule things on my pinkies. The doctor tested for all kinds of arthritis and things of the like, but all of the tests came back negative. Has anyone ever had these symptoms?

Thanks,
Desiree

Oh dear! It does sound like DC. Can you put your hand flat? If not you need to see your doctor again and ask him to refer you to a hand consultant. Once you have a diagnosis you can decide how you want it treated.

With this "table-top test" - are you supposed to force your fingers and plam flat just to see if you can do it? Or are you supposed to gently lay your hand down and see if it lays flat by itself?

Thanks,
Desiree

The way to do it is, put your wrist on the table, then your thumb and each finger in turn. When you put your little finger down it should go flat like the others. If there is a gap under your little finger it is possibly Dupuytrens. Do not try to press fingers down, they should go down fairly easily. There may be tiny gaps in your other fingers but normally it is the little finger which will not go fairly flat. Only an expert can decide.

Sorry Desiree, forgot to say, go on www.handcenter.org
There is a lot of info there and it shows how the hand is when there is Dupuytrens.

Did you ever have extensive use , or injury to the hands? It starts out like you don't know what is going on. I have friends that have it , and don't even know it. All I see, is what the palms of their hands look like. If you massage the hand, sometimes it does come back to being alright for a bit. But you have to do that every day. I Do. Before I do the PT exersizes, I can't put my hand down flat, and after I do the exersizes, I can lay it flat. It is painfull, but if done 3 times a day, it Works. Massage, and stretching. Fist making, and stretching it out.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate all of your feedback. I guess I'll just wait and see if it progresses, if I really do have the disease. I do strech my fingers everday just in case I might have it, so maybe that's why they haven't gotten much worse. I haven't had any particular injuries, I just do a lot of data entry so I constantly use my hands. I wonder if that's a contributing factor at all.
