Can someone help with orthotic questions?

I did a search and didn't see any answer on this, so here goes.

I am suppose to see a podiatrist for orthotics next. Of course my insurance doesn't cover them and they will cost about $400. A pretty big dent in my pocketbook!

I have in both feet and the lumps seems to be actively growing as of late. So my first question would be, if I got orthotics wouldn't I have to get new ones every time the size increases?

Secondly, can anyone tell me if they are worth the money? My experience right now, is a pretty considerable amount of discomfort with LD. Sometimes walking is difficult.)

I would appreciate any opinions before I make the appt. and shell out that kind of money.

Thanks!

Re: Can someone help with orthotic questions?

Hi Australia Calling. I was diagnosed back in 2000 with a lump in the arch. Saw a hand specialist who advised it was a form of Dupuytrens and to do nothing. He was against and sort of foot surgery. I have high arched insteps and saw a podiatrist, who ordered and fitted orthodics. They had to be worn with lace up shoes and not slip in elastic type shoes. It was fine until I went to Germany in late 2007 to see Prof Seegenschmiedt about my hands.(Dupuytrens ) I had radiotherapy treatment on both feet for Ledderhose . By the second treatment the orthodics caused me discomfort in the radiated area as the nodules and cord were changing. On my next visit in consultation with the Prof. he suggested it was no longer of any benifit to wear the orthodics as my feet were normallizing with the cord reduced in size and the nodule could not be felt unless the foot was stressed. The first thing I was advised was to buy good quality shoes with thick cushion type inner soles. When I returned to Australia ,the podiotrist fitted a thin dense rubber product under the innersol and heel area. It was like walking on air.My feet continue to improve. The Prof. recommended the Nike Free walking/running shoes which the makers say are the same as walking bare feet. They are excellent.
Finally I would investigate Low dose Radiotherapy for the Ledderhose and hopefully stop the disease.

Re: Can someone help with orthotic questions?

Thanks Linda B and Newman for your input! I am going to research Dr. Dinkler. I have knuckle pads as well. I am walking despite pain though.. but physical therapist is saying it is affecting my hip, knees and all now. She said there is nothing more she can do for me until I get feet taken care of.

Newman: I am happy for you that you no longer require orthotics! That is encouraging.
I am going to check out the Nikes. I guess I need to research radiotherapy more thoroughly. I have high arches too. But my nodules are now on the floor, and growing. Have been to orthopedic surgeon and I am going to wait on the podiatrist then....I really don't want to spend that much on orthotics that probably won't work that long. Because it is becoming painful to walk, I really need to do something soon though. Esp. since they seem to be actively growing, despite starting NAC and transdermal verapamil.

Re: Can someone help with orthotic questions?

Hi,

I developed knuckle pads in my teens and LD in mid twenties, now DD in hand at 57.

Operation on first knuckle pad made it much worse, and have got by without much impairment. Suggest leaving knuckle pads if they don't annoy as mine have diminished in recent years.

Surgery for LD on foot made small lump into a huge cord, and a number of new lumps. Report from newman gives some hope that radiation therapy would be most appropriate.

I had orthotics for my foot, but could not use them because of discomfort. Ended up cutting holes in my shoes under the arch so it did not make contact. At that stage I was too shy to tell the orthotics person they were no good, so probably not really fair trial of orthotics.

Chris.

Re: Can someone help with orthotic questions?

I have nodules on the arch of both feet. My podiatrist did not recommend orthodics just a pair of good runners. After wearing New Balance basic stabilising shoes which would only last 3 months at a time before I had to buy a new pair ( eventually caused pain up my legs and feet), I was fitted at a New Balance store in Sarasota by a trained salesperson with the top end New Balance stabilizer with a roller bar and inner soles to address my high arches. I now can only wear these shoes at all times.
I did see a chiropidist who fitted my with the rubber inner soles. I wore through these in two days.
