New Cord
As I await my March 11 appointment for the multi cord clinical trial intake/pre-Xiaflex stuff, I just noticed yesterday a new cord on my hand. This one is going up along the inside of my pinky, and now makes a total of four cords on my right hand. This is new. Obviously, it is not yet contracting...... or is it? My hand is becoming so stiff and unable to straighten that I think my pinky may be limited, albeit minimally at this point.
At what point do you say "screw this" and just go for an open surgery clean-out? I had OS on my left hand over ten years ago, and it's been perfect since. Waaaaaa......

Re: New Cord
My first choice is surgery. Mine was 11 years ago and still perfect. It just depends on the person. I didn't think surgery was that bad - no pain with great results. Everyone is different.

Re: New Cord
Thanks, Callie. I kind of lean towards the surgery, too. But, when we did that so many years ago, there were no other options, and I hate the idea of using surgery as a first choice. So, I'm going to try Xiaflex. But, with four cords, it's starting to look like a real, literal pain. I'll do the multi cord trial next month, but they only do two cords at a time. I'll see how that works out. Then make a future decision....... leaning towards surgery...... I think..... ....

Re: New Cord
With Surgery comes alot more baggage,Nerve Blocks,Anesthesia,Stitches,PT and time off work. Not to mention Dups Flare.I would have surgery on one hand and it would show up in the other in no time at all,4 Surgeries in 3 years.Im not saying not have surgery but in my case all it did was piss it off.Its been 15 months on my right hand with Xiaflex and so far so good.I have another Xiaflex injection next month,2 cords down 3 to go.I had my manipulation on a Thursday and was back to work on the following Tuesday. You cant do that with Surgery.Good Luck. Re: New Cord
Dave, thanks for your reassurance. It really helps. Although my surgery was a resounding success, you're right about all the baggage. I had it all. Full steam ahead to Xiaflex....... ~ Diane

Re: New Cord
Hammer,
I had the same experience. I waited for over a year before the contraction on my left hand was enough for surgery. But then after I had it, my right began to form the disease within months. While the timing seemed connected to me I could see no rational for it. We know that trauma can trigger Dups growth......but on another part of the body? What possible sympathetic system in the body could account for that?
zinkadoodle, is NA not available to you? I might take an hour or so but a good NA guy can do the whole hand in one session.

Re: New Cord
Randy,
I had the same experience as hammer: after my surgery I got six new and quickly growing nodules outside the operated area, 3 of them even on the not operated hand. This happened within two months after my surgery and it must be related to it. My guess is that the healing process is not just local but, at least in part, a body wide response.

Re: New Cord
So, is there any information that Dupuytren's is a disease that is transmitted through the circulation of the blood?

Re: New Cord
I wonder how may of us there are who read this forum have had the same experience?
You would assume that the out of control scar tissue reaction due to hand trauma would be only local. But the body's complexity is still beyond our comprehension.
It could be argued that what we've experienced is just coincidence, that we were going to have bilateral disease any way, and at the same time. But I'm not buying that. But if not, are nerves involved, blood at callie suggested or something else?
Well, you know me. This post would be incomplete without me suggesting that the least invasive procedure that has a chance to work should always be tried first in any surgical decision.
