I'm a drummer

Hi All,

I've just had a contracture surgically released, the stitches come out next week, and I really want to avoid a contracture again. Trouble is I'm a drummer playing with a folk band, ceilidh band and a few moris sides and here it's mostly hand percussion - cajon, djembe, doumbek, udo etc.

I'm getting the feedback that hand percussion and Dupuytren's really don't go together that well. Does anyone have any experience of this - could I wear gloves, would that help? Any thoughts or sage advice welcomed. Thanks!

[by way of background, Dupuytren's is in the family and yes I'm a Viking :)]

All typed with one hand!
Cheers
John

Re: I'm a drummer

Only a personal opinion here. I think that the less exposure to abnormal hand stress the better. Gloves or anything limiting repetitious impact would be worth the effort.

Good luck with your recovery. Keep the wound moist with lotion 24/7 (never let hand dry out). I used Aveeno lotion and carried a small tube with me for a couple of months. Use a night-time splint for a couple of months. Flex your hand all during the day. I had surgery 10 years ago and my hand is as good as before Dupuytren's ( zero contraction).

Re: I'm a drummer

I don't know the answer, but just wonder if using a digital drum kit would produce less strain on the hand and arm? I've heard that the technology sounds quite good but still lacks something of the tone variation of a real drum kit.

Re: I'm a drummer

I myself had surgery 10 years ago and my finger is also still fully functional and without recurrence (but I had a lot of extension elsewhere after surgery). I had fairly little physio afterwards, no splint and did nothing speciffic to maintain the finger straight, no splint.

BTW, there seems to be indication (not yet published) that the probability for recurrence after fasciectomy depends primarily on the skill of the surgeon and less on the technique. Likely other factors also play a role but chosing a hand surgeon who is very experienced with Dupuytren's is probably a good idea. - That observation does not include NA which shows faster recurrence per se.

Frequent stress/damage to the hand might foster Dupuytren's http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...ure_trauma.html therefore Henry's suggestion might be a wise one.

Re: I'm a drummer

Hi All,

Thanks for the thoughts and comments etc. I guess it's one of these things I'm going to have to play by ear - perhaps I leave off playing the hand percussive stuff and stay with the Bodhran - the morris dancing with sticks may take a hit too! I'll try with gloves and seehow things go.

Cheers

Re: I'm a drummer

Hi John,

Just out of curiosity, what side do you dance/play with?

I'm a Poole- based morris dancer and musician.

Asking your fellow dancers to hit gently with the sticks might also help. (One of our dancers asks that, as he's a bad shoulder - the others all hit very hard except with him)

Or try North West morris which doesn't have the stick clashes...

Re: I'm a drummer

Hi Judith,

I play with a border side (Ely and Littleport Riot) and dance with a very enthusiastic Cotswold side (Coton Morris Men) and a very traditional Molly side (Mepal Molly) - all based near Cambridge.

The most dancing is Cotswold with strong sticking, we use sledge-hammer handles for the show dances, which is not ideal for Dupuytren's. When I get back to dancing I'll try gloves and have to see how it goes.

My worry is that all of the little bits start adding up - some hand drumming, some morris sticking etc. Something may have to go .......

Thanks for your comments
Cheers

Sorry, I just can't help myself. I just have to say that if you "play by ear," it probably won't aggravate the DD in your hand

We need to laugh at this weird disease whenever we can. Hope you can laugh at my sense of humor.

Hi Flora,

No worries - it was written with tongue in cheek, I find playing by ear gives me a headache!
