Re: Dupuytren's & age

Hey,

3 months now since surgery on my left hand, I was worried - but trusted my consultant and what she thought was best. I have had amazing treatment on the NHS! The follow up was great too. 2 weeks off work, although I did pop in a few times and the best bit.... 6 weeks off washing up!!!!
It's lovely to have a flat hand again (little finger was at about 30%), yes the scar is there - but it's alraedy looking better and they say will hardly notice in 2 years. I also had a 'saddle' removed from my ring finger knuckle, this has been a bit harder as I'm still trying to get full use back and get the swelling down. But physio has really helped and there isn't much padding on fingers so I suppose it just takes longer to repair!
I slept with a splint on my hand for 3 months, but this wasn't a problem and I don't have to use it any more.
How long it will last I don't know & I also need to decide in the next few months whether to have my right hand done (2 middle fingers).
Advice is really hard to give, as I believe different proceedures suit different people. The trick is finding a consultant you trust and doing something early enough. The longer it is left or the worse it gets, then the harder it will be to get the fingers straight after any proceedure.

Re: Dupuytren's & age

Just got back from my doctor telling me I have it. At 43 thought I was a bit young. Doc says nothing can be done for it until it hits a '3.' I don't have the curled fingers but I have the cramping when I drive or hold things too long in my hand. My grandma had it too but not until she was well into her 70s. But just read as a diabetic I am more prone to get it and having relative from Northen Europe.
