New nodule?

Flora, Diana and others:

This may sound odd, but after your first nodule appeard, what were your symptoms when you got another one? My first nodule began as a sore spot. then a small bump which grew. Were your sypmtoms like this? I am asking because I have a sore spot that appeared on the palm pad below my thumb and I am worried. It feels like a deep bruise but without the bruise. I am trying not to over react but.....it got my attention.

Re: New nodule?

Hi Lori,

I just noticed a bump on my hand - wasn't sure at first if I was imagining it or not. I'm not sure what made me notice it, it could have been pain but I just don't know. After that I was super sensitive about my hand, noticing every little thing, and 6- 8 weeks later went to the doctor (I couldn't get in before due to a heavy workload) and was diagnosed.

From reading your blogs, you seem to have much more pain than I do. My hand and finger ache but it is a pain that comes and goes, isn't that severe, and doesn't keep me up at night. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being unbearable, I'd say it is a 2.5 - 4, it varies.

I'm now noticing a couple more potential nodules but they are soft so am not sure if they are Duputren's. I'm not sure if my primary doctor will be able to diagnose them but plan to make an appointment within the next few weeks so that if they are Dupuytren's, then they can get the radiation that I will have again in October.

All my best to you, Diana

Re: New nodule?

Lori,

I first saw a bump/nodule on my palm about 1/2 inch below the thumb-forefinger web. It was not sore. I continued to develop nodules and ended up with about a dozen - some small, some larger, some soft, some harder, some close together, some joining together. I am the nodule queen! Cords typically don't respond to RT as well as nodules d. I have had little contracture.

Looking back, I believe my first symptom was some pain in my right thumb when I was supporting my upper body weight on my palms down hands during exercise. I assumed it was arthritis. I believe it was the stretching of cords that were not visible. Some contraccture did develop and I had NA done on that in March. I now have that same stretching-like pain in my left hand so am watchful of that hand. It has two visible cords and no visible nodules. Go figure! I have had very little pain - that which I described in my thumb and some aching in the heel of my palm and up into my wrist.

Just because you don't have the symptoms that other have, doesn't mean that you don't have Dups. It also doesn't mean that you do have it either. That's why it is so very helpful to know exactly what other people are feeling and seeing. This is a strange disease.

Re: New nodule?

I just read the exchange regarding nodules. I was diagnosed with DC about 8 mos. ago. I have been developing nodules in both hands for about a year and it seems to be getting worse all the time, although I have no contracture yet. Is there any good treatment for nodules? The palms of my hands look awful and I'd like to know my options instead of just waiting for my hands to bend.

Re: New nodule?

I'm hoping that the radiation treatment I'm currently getting will either reduce the nodule size or at the very least, stop and/or delay the progression of Dupuytren's.

You might want to consider reading about the various therapies on this and other websites - especially the sections dealing with early stages.

Re: New nodule?

Emerald,
Your hand sounds just like mine. I had lots of nodules all over my palm, but only a little contracture in my pinkie and thumb.
Dr. Tripurneni at Scripps, La Jolla, did my radiation. The nodules were reduced but more important, the itchy feeling of the active Dupuytren's has gone. I take as a clear indication that it was effective for me. Dr. T says that radiation "will do nothing for scar tissue." That's why it needs to be done before scar tissue forms which is apparently what the cords are. Radiation does not remove cords but I think it may soften them a little and hopefully stop the growth. Dr. T was clear that radiation therapy is most likely to be effective when Dupuys is active. So, if they are still developing, that's when RT will most likely work. He gave me statistics of 66% chance of it working. I felt that I had all the right symptoms and it was active.
It is not cheap. I have Medicare and a supplemental insurance. I'd be in Germany right now, I think, if I didn't.
Email be if you have specific questions.

Re: New nodule?

You might like to try treating your new nodules with ultrasound. I am pretty sure it has worked for me when I used it on a very new nodule, softening and reducing its size and preventing any further deterioration. I have treated it regularly (2-3 times a week) over the last 9 years and so far there is no contraction of the finger. I wrote a more detailed account on this forum.
