New therapy - Dupuytren’s disease study

Greetings,

MedSpan is a market research firm based in Illinois. Our client is a drug company that is developing a new therapy for the treatment of Dupuytren’s disease. This therapy is not currently available on the market.

We are currently conducting a study to understand patients’ reactions to this therapy. All that is required is a 45-minute telephone interview. We will be scheduling interviews for March 23 through April 10, 2009. We will schedule an interview at a time and date that is convenient for you.

In appreciation of your time, we are offering an honorarium of $75.

We are seeking only 25 Dupuytren’s disease patients to participate in our study, so please respond at your earliest convenience. If you are interested, please contact:

Sounds interesting... I wonder what the pharmaceutical objective is.

I'm not sure. It involves watching things on the computer and giving my opinion.

They don't say which drug company they are working for. That's a red flag. They want information you might not want to be made public. I got this pitch in my E-mail and dumped it. Be very carefull

Re: New therapy - Dupuytren’s disease study

$75 is a good incentive for me!

I did it earlier this evening. It's a marketing research firm that has obviously been hired by a company that will be releasing an injectable therapy for DC. They gave three scenarios - injections, NA and surgery, and asked pros, cons, etc. of each way to treat DC. Probably most relevant question was how much would I be willing to pay for it. I basically said I'd pay up to the amount of NA for it (they gave me the scenario of NA being $250 [I wish!]).

Thank you Mary. What questions did they ask you? I am all for new therapys but I'm a physician myself and this didn't sound right. I have helped patients into reseach protocols and this just sounded to vague compaird to the real ones I've worked with.

Re: New therapy - Dupuytren’s disease study

It wasn't for a research study - it was really for how to market the product. Why I would or would not choose their method as opposed to NA or surgery (convenience, less invasive, cost, etc.) They just asked open-ended questions. Having worked in market research about 20 years ago, the questions were pretty standard.

To me, it sounds like whoever is going to be marketing the injectable is trying to figure out how to price it and pitch it to patients.

Re: New therapy - Dupuytren’s disease study

I spent a pleasant 45 minutes being interviewed by the head of Medspan Research on Tuesday morning. I was given an 800 number to call and a website to log onto so I could see a simple diagram. Nothing graphic as I had initially feared. Robert wanted to know about my dups experience, how it has impacted my life, my NA with Dr. Pess in December of 2006, & how things have gone since then. He sought my opinion of a proposed 3 step treatment diagram for an unnamed injectable product referred to only as "product DD". He was a thorough interviewer and a good listener who summarized my statements to make sure he was hearing me correctly. I assumed it was Xiaflex although he could not verify that. He informed me that a representative from the company would be listening in. So I took it as an opportunity to share my hopes & concerns about making sure that when it comes on the market that it will be affordable for those who can use it as a treatment mode. As a retiree, I can use the $75 honorarium when it arrives in several weeks.

You just did an excellent job of describing it! The woman I spoke with was very pleasant, and I'm looking forward to the honorarium too!
