Question: Coenzyme Q10 and collegenase
Hi everyone,
I am reading a book on menopause in which the author (a physician) suggests that Coenzyme Q10 is one of the most important supplements for a person in mid-life to take. However, she notes that Coenzyme Q10, vitamin E and vitamin C inhibit collagenase enzymes. I surmise from this that it is probably not a great for people with Dupuytren's to take Conenzyme Q10?
Dr. Kline told me that excessivly large amounts of vitamin C should not be taken by people with Dupuytren's, I imagine for the same reason?

Megan,
I find this very interesting. I started taking CoQ10 last year and was diagnosed later in the year with DC. However, I have also been taking an epilepsy medication for the past two year for a different condition. I have also read on several websites that you have a slightly higher chance of getting DC if you are being treated for epilepsy. I wonder if taking the CoQ10 and epilepsy medication accelerated my DC. My nodules first appeared in the summer and I was diagnosed in October. Since then, it has spread to a second finger.

Just saw this post. I would love an answer to the CO-Q 10 as well. I am also taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C. I sure don't won't to do anything to aggravate this disease. Does anyone know about this?

Hi Debrr,
I asked Dr. Kline about this when I saw him in November. I'm also taking 1000 mg of C, the reason being that I'm taking NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) and a couple of websites I looked at said if you take NAC, you need to take twice to three times that amount of Vitamin C (I'd like to know if anyone on this site could confirm this).
Dr. Kline said he believed it would have to be really large amounts of Vitamin C (I think he said something like 10,000 mg daily). Whatever it was, he felt like 1000 was fine for me to take.

Thanks for your answer Megan! I didn't know you needed more Vitamin C with NAC. So thanks for informing me on that. I am also taking NAC. How much are you taking? For how long? Do you see any difference?
Is anyone taking CO-Q 10 with NAC? I am suppose to take it I guess because I am on statins. But I would quit taking it in a heartbeat it I knew it would aggravated LD!

I am taking 600 mg of NAC per day. I've been taking it since June, 2008. Hard to say whether it is working, because I've just finished radiation, plus I've had two kenalog injections into my nodule. As you can see, I'm hitting this from all angles!

Hi Megan Australia Calling. When did you have the injection of kenalog. Before or after RT. Was it Kenalog 40 with Lidocaine 2% What was the time frame between injections. Regards.

Hello Newman,
I had kenalog (not sure of any other specifics) and Lidocaine in June 2008 and another set of injections the Friday I finished the radiation therapy, in November 2008. I went directly from my last radiation appointment over to Dr. Kline's for the kenalog injection; Dr. Kuhn, the radiation oncologist, said it would be OK.
It seems to have flattened and it is not tender like it was previously.

Thanks Megan Australia Calling. I had RT on a nodule on my left index (30 Gy ) which stopped all the itchiness and growing sensation etc.The nodule has softened andwhen I apply pressure it moves and reduces, but then returns. In Oct/08 I spoke with Prof Seegenschmiedt about having an injection of Kenalog. He was not opposed to it . I got a referal but have been waiting. Having read your post I will now act . Regards.
