Re: Mortality and dupuytren

Louise1234:
Sorry to piggy back on this thread, but I have just been diagnosed also and am stressing out over the various studies I have read about increased mortality after 12 years. I don't understand how all the percentages of different risks work. If there is someone on this forum who could explain the statistics using actual numbers I would be so grateful. The more I think about it the more I can't work it out, and the more worried I become.
Hi Louise

My simplification: The study shows that for 12 years after diagnosis the baseline risk of excess mortality is LESS for Dupuytrens patients, and after 12 years it increases a small amount but probably due to causes that can be addressed during the 12 years immediately after diagnosis (smoking, diabetes, alcohol, obesity, etc). The actual numbers of baseline reductions and increases are shown in supplement #3. Compared to driving a car, crossing the road, etc, if you eat a healthy diet, exercise, don't smoke, watch your weight, lipids, and all the other things western medicine screens for as you age such as bowel cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular, the baseline increase is so low that its not worth worrying or stressing about, and other risks unrelated to DD are more likely to throw you a curveball.

Best wishes SB
