Dupuytren from playing golf?

I noticed what I thought were calluses on my left hand after playing quite a bit of golf. There are no issues with the right.

But now I believe this is Dupuytren not calluses. I found this out when my brother had the same problem.
Then I also found out my mom and dad had this as well, but never had surgery. I did not know any of this
info until recently.

Currently I can move all my fingers just fine, but I feel a little tightness which I hardly notice. I don't feel like I have lost any flexiblity.

I have two nodules , ring finger has the largest, and a smaller one under the middle finger. Nothing under the pinky that I can tell.

I also see the cords starting to poke out a little.

Since my fingers are still flexible I don't want to do any surgery.

What can I do so it doesn't get worse? Please don't say STOP playing golf. ha ha.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Dupuytren from playing golf?

Hi ,
The best course of action would be to see a DD SPECIALIST.The doc can help u out with what is on the agenda for psio therapy, or a variety of treatment mentioned on this forum for nodes. Lots of hope that you can continue golf!
I cannot see your hand. What you describe could be treated many ways. Yet a break from golf to rest the hand and relieve pressure on the nodgules may be recommended, or a special padded glove.

Kind Regards,

Re: Dupuytren from playing golf?

Hi jtampa

Carry on playing golf. I have DD in both hands, sore nodules right now in my tennis racquet hand and I play regular competitive tennis. I do wear a glove though.

Perhaps start a photo log with a records of symptoms. The only preventative treatment option is RT if there are signs the condition is active with growing nodules and cords, some soreness or aches, tightening, etc. A hand specialist experienced in DD might help, but would probably say wait until there is a contracture then have surgery. Most people do not need any treatment at all, and the condition does tend to flare up then settle down, and so on.

We suggest NA or Collagenase to correct modest contracture, before considering surgery, but you are a long way from that.

If you have any of the other risk factors that you can perhaps influence via life style changes, then consider doing so,

Best SB

Re: Dupuytren from playing golf?

Thats great to hear that you can continue to play golf/tennis.

As for massaging the hand. I guess the purpose is to break down scar tissue? Is this correct?
Should I be massaging the nodules and cord directly or the entire palm?

Can someone point me to a youtube video that shows how you are supposed to massage the hand.

I did a search but it really didn't turn up anything specific for DC.

Dr. Eaton used to recommend using a 6" long one or two inch diameter dowle. Place it under your hand and roll back and forth massaing your hand on a hard surface like a table.

I think the massage method works for some and not others, it was using a small wooden rod (valve grinder tool) that caused my DD to flare rapidly and then I needed surgery, would not want to contradict Dr Eaton so go carefully at first. Any pain is probably a bad sign as it might signal the system to send a repair team and that could mean collagen which is fuel for DD. I just started a thread on a treatment that worked for me - take a look.

Be very careful with any direct massage or pressure on the nodules. I feel that the risk/reward ratio does not make sense. You are far more likely to aggravate DD than help it. One of my nodules is now much more easily aggravated since an attempt at massaging it.

Re: Dupuytren from playing golf?

I agree about being careful with massaging nodules. I had three... no signs of contraction at all. For only one week gently massaged with Bio Oil and now nodules seem more noticeable and there is now a cord appearing going to my pinky. I have stopped any treatment and will just let it do it's course.

Re: Dupuytren from playing golf?

Jeannelk, did it get better after you stopped with the bio-oil?
I tried it for a week also, and it seems to have made my (only) nodule harder and bigger.
