Re: RT In the Dallas TX area

Judith,
There is a long list of insurance companies that have covered RT for DD in this country. Once you find a doctor to treat you they will check to make sure you are covered. The insurance company may deny coverage but then you will need to appeal. If the doctor is in your court they will do the appeal for you. I have BCBS of Iowa and appealed and won, but I put a lot of pressure on BCBS. If you need help at that point I will be happy to tel you what I did. A committed doctor is your first step.

JMW59:
Thank you everyone, you've all been very helpful and encouraging.

I have a list of RT's from my Health Plans' website. There's quite a few.

Does anyone know if this is covered by insurance, or is it considered "experimental"?

Thanks again
Judith
JUDITH,
HERE'S WHAT I POSTED IN MARCH RE: INSURANCE CODES FOR RT, MAYBE IT WILL BE HELPFUL TO YOU....LUBA

Re: RT payments...Compiling a List of Insurance Codes
As promised here is a list of Insurance Codes that I have been compiling in order to share with all of you who are trying to get Insurance Companies to approve payment for RT. Hope this list is helpful. I will post again if more people send me their codes..........LubaM.

Aetna says the CPT RT code for DD is 77401 and the ICD-9 code for DD is 728.6.
I believe those are the codes put in for me at MGH last week where I had my first week of treatments.
You can check out the Aetna online at Aetna.com, then find Bulletins, then find the #0800 Policy. It is interesting reading and may help others with their research.
Thanks for doing this,
Fjellver

Re: RT In the Dallas TX area

I am a 51 year old female of Russian/Polish descent and have just recently been diagnosed with DD. I first noticed a problem with my R thumb when I was working in the lab ( I am a scientist) about 5 weeks ago. I found I was having trouble using an automatic pipette as I couldn't bend my thumb properly or use it with any pressure. It turns out that I have a nodule and after seeing a hand specialist I was told I have DD. I have limited movement in my thumb and it's quite painful. I have since found out that my uncle has it too, so obviously, it is hereditary in my case. I had a cortisone injection on Mon and am supposed to have another 2 over the next 2 months. The specialist informed me that I am quite young to have this disease and that it wiil cause me alot of angst over the next decades. I am on limited duties at work, which is really frustrating and don't want to have surgery as it can aggravate the progression of DD. The doc never mentioned RT or Needle Aponeurotomy treatments to alleviate the progression.

The nodule has got bigger over the last 5 weeks and I am worried that I will never be able to regain full duties at work......what do I do after the cortisone injections are completed?

When you say "hand specialist" did you mean a "hand surgeon"? In my experience, many hand surgeons are against all form of treatments if its not surgery. It would be a mistake to wait for the thumb to get worst or to think that surgery is the only treatment. There are many on this Forum (including myself) that believe in RT. I had RT for my DD and Ledderhose in November 2009. The RT has stopped the progression of the disease in the treated areas.

Read all you can on this Forum about RT and Needle Aponeurotomy (NA) by doing a "Search" for both, and come back with more questions.....and if needed go for a second opinion or find a hand specialist that is open to a variety of treatments. Don't let any doctor tell you that surgery is the only way!!! If you decide to go with RT, the best time to do it is when the disease is progressing (like yours seems to be) at the early stages, before any contracture of fingers occurs.

There are many great doctors listed under "treatment" that are experienced in RT or NA>

Re: RT In the Dallas TX area

Thanks I am from Sydney, Australia and the Dr is an orthopedic specialist who didn't mention any of the options on this site including Xiaflex injections. So glad I found this forum! Don't know if RT, Needle Aponeurotomy is available here or whether clinical trials have started for Xiaflex treatment? But will look into it and will see what the Doc has to say for himself!
