Same Boat (or bike)

Please accept my heartfelt thanks to all you posters -- for sharing your experiences, for sharing your insights, for sharing your compassion, and for taking so much time and effort to post here.

I've had dupes for several years and I remember first searching the web for info -- and discovering those "wonderful" pictures of the traditional surgical procedure. I remember speaking with my local surgeon who informed me of my only "option" and that, well, if I waited too long then he also had experience in amputations.

Then I discovered Walt's page. And someone else's page. And finally this forum. I spent a year here, reading and studying and learning while my dupes got more aggressive. I really didn't want to go to France, but was preparing. Then came the rumor of some Doc down in Florida doing the "Paris procedure".

I waited some more, reading about the experiences of those of you who went. Not one bad report from what I could tell. Instead, a collective shout of "What are you waiting for?!"

You posted places to stay (I stayed at the Wellesley Inn, reasonable and within walking distance to several restaurants). You posted encouragement, praise for Dr. Eaton and his staff, and much other good advice. But mostly you posted "What are you waiting for?"

On June 10 I flew down for a Friday and Monday appointment. Pessimistically I figured that if every one else had such fine results then I would be the exception to the rule. But I wasn't. Hands that couldn't fit into my pants pockets, hands that couldn't grip my Harley handlebars right, hands that couldn't type well any more (I'm a writer so that was devastating)-- these hands could now lie flat on a tabletop after the NA.

I thanked Dr. Eaton for having the courage and foresight to question convention and explore this new procedure. But I wouldn't have known of him without this forum.

So thanks to ALL OF YOU and may the Creator bless ALL OF YOU. NA has worked very well for me. My one gripe? My %#@*&^# Blue Cross insurance reimbursed me the princely sum of $60.42 (they ruled this an "out of network" procedure) so this has taken a financial toll on me.

But hey, last week I kicked some fire into my Harley for the first time since returning. I squeezed the clutch with my new and improved left hand, cracked the throttle wide-open with my new and improved right hand -- and thundered toward the horizon and into the promise of a wonderfully new and improved day. Life is good.

My best wishes to all of you -- Mark

    Mark,
Great post! I also owe my renewed motorcycle riding to Dr. Eaton. After my N/A in January, my wife and I headed for Key West where we rented one of those little motor scooters. Just enough to get the bug back! I had not riden in almost 20 years. When we returned to Virginia I started looking and found a 1990 Harley "Low Rider" with low mileage. Having a blast and my left hand, on which Dr. Eaton preformed the N/A, has no problem working the clutch. I can still lay it flat on the table after six months.

I am also very greatfull for all who have posted on this site. I was two days away from going under the knife when I saw the pictures of the "traditional" surgery on the web and started looking for alternatives. Thank God I found this forum!

One-sided? How many posts have you read about failed traditional surgeries? Talk to the people who have had both procedures, and listen to their experience.

Mark - that was a lovely post! I'm so glad Eaton helped you and you are now riding and writing again!

I also can put my hands in my pockets again thanks to eaton. Small but important wonders....

Mark, Joe and all the success stories

I too feel that I'm going to be the exception because I have had this so long and had two surgeries with horrid results, but after reading the posts I feel very positive about having both hands done by Dr. Eaton in August...if I had seen this site before I wouldn't have been so apprehensive in May when I had a consultation, but didn't go ahead...the sincere posts and this site are so valuable.

                  can clap hands again

I couldn't agree more with Marks post! Dr.Eaton performed na on my hands the first week in june and I was petting sea turtles the same evening with my first hand and carrying my luggage the next day on the last hand. Dr.Eaton and his staff are a class act!Something as simple as clapping your hands you take for granted until you can no longer do it.Dr.Eaton I applaude you!

so right on Rick...last week at theater, I realized how clapping not only is diffcult, but I make no noise whatsoever...hope to do that after my visit in Florida.. and that we can all continue to applaude Dr. Eaton..
