callie:
Your suspicions about your hand surgery triggering activity for Dupuytren's is not unfounded. Many things can trigger Dupuytren's in a person who has an inherent genetic disposition for the disease.

What are the credentials of this "hand specialist"?

I think he was one of those Doogy Houser types. You know, straight A's , aspergers , smarmyness, Saw 10 patients in the half hour I was there. Great marks in school and learning all the material , to me , does not make a good doctor. Great people skills and a acceptance that you dont know everything is important. Medicine is really more of an art than a science. Quite impressive none the less. Also Dont know of anyone in the family that had it for 3 generations at least. I asked around.

The " "hand specialist" does not appear to be a "hand specialist" from his website. The person I always dealt with did nothing above the wrist. He was a total "hand specialist". I think there are many practitioners who take Dupuytren's lightly. It is not a simple disease even though it is generally not a serious disease in relation to many other diseases.

I will try the massaging and stop the serious stretching for now.

Hi Mick9,
I would be careful about massaging as well. My understanding is that outside of a postoperation treatment, it can trigger DD as well.

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

Hi
Just found this site after being diagnosed with Dupuytren's contracture today. I live abroad but am from the UK and will be treated in the UK.

A couple of nodules on my left hand appeared in June 2012, however a couple of months ago I decided on stretching against the contracture and even more nodules and bands have developed very quickly and the "morphing" sensation has been uncomfortable and at times painful. One of the new bands is all the way down to my wrist but I can still lay my hand flat. I am also feeling the same "morphing" sensations in my left foot but the doctor didn't find any nodules/bands.

I have been given three options: do nothing, radio-therapy or wait. I am opting for RT but am concerned about the side effects which concerned me after reading the UK's NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Dupuytrens-...es/Surgery.aspx

I would like to also point out that I have been taking joint supplements containing collagen for about a year for my knees and interestingly the bands and nodules of Dupuytren's are made up of collagen. A new injectable medicine called collagenase clostridium histolyticum is being used to treat Dupuytren's by dismantling the collage. So are my supplements to blame for this onset? I have just stopped taking these!

It sounds as if RT is the way to go for me just now but I shall see what my doctor's opinions are re this new treatment.

B

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

I have not had any changes in my nodules since I started gentle stretches rather than aggressive stretching(recommended by my hand surgeon) To me it makes sense and will continue. I also play guitar for about an hour or 2 a day as that is something that I am not willing to give up.
I went for a referral to see a local hand surgeon that does aponeurotomy but, the specialist emailed me and said at this point he would not even look at my hand since there is no contraction and I may not ever have one so...just wait and see approach.
I asked him about RT therapy and advised against it. He says noone in Canada is doing it and cancer risk is undesireable. Although there is a doctor in Calgary that is doing RT , I am not willing to journey back east (Im in Vancouver) . Sometimes I sit on my hand to keep it flat. A few months into diagnosis and I still have no loss of flexability at all. only slight pain when I stretch the trigger finger incision scar.

Dupuytren's can react very slowly. Mild stretching probably is beneficial for the surrounding tissue. The Dupuytren's may, or may not, be affected by the stretching. That is the nature of Dupuytren's.

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

Many thanks callie and mick9.

I appreciate that Dupuytren's behaves differently for each person but in my case the speed at which the other nodules/bands appeared across my palm after stretching is too much of a coincidence especially after many months of being stable at just two nodules.
I have however found a link to exercises for Dupuytren's http://inhealth.cnn.com/understanding-du...hand-exercises/ which advises against stretching, emphasizing instead on lifting the fingers up (so not by pulling) whilst the palm is flat on a table. Tried it out but my DD "bands" are tingling now and I have sharp twinges in one of my newer "bands".

Going to look into holistic options.

Thanks again for your replies.

The risk of getting cancer from RT is so tiny of percent its not worth talking about when it comes to having your hands backs. Its been 3 years since i did RT and would do it again, and again, and again.

Thank you cindy850 that is swaying me towards RT a bit more. I don't want to leave it until RT is not an option anymore.

A night splint is like consistent, mild stretching. Wearing one has been very effective for me. I see it as pushing back against Dupuytren's, but not fighting against it as hard stretching would be. A little different perspective.
