Hi Spanishbuddha
That would be a coincidence - when are you going?

My first appointment is on the 21st Feb, with treatment that day and and the 4 days following. I believe I see the Prof on the first and last day, but the treatment is done by the clinic technicians following the directions from the first consultation.

Re: Going to Germany for RT!

Hi All,

I'm pretty sure at this point that I'm going to Hamburg too!

As discussed in another thread, I had RT last February (at exactly this time, oddly enough) at Scripps in San Diego. All seemed to be going great (progression stopped, nodules shrinking etc) until about 2 weeks ago when I found a new nodule right next to one that had been treated last year.

At this point, I am consulting remotely with both Scripps and Dr. Seegenschmiedt in Hamburg about what I should do next. But my strong inclination is to go to Hamburg, assuming Dr. Seegenschmiedt says he thinks that would be appropriate. If I had it to do all over again, I would have gone to Hamburg in the first place, as I strongly suspect that the recurrence happened either because my treatment margins weren't adequate or the dosage was insufficient, or both. (At Scripps they do 2 gy x 10 days, as opposed to the German protocol of 3 gy x 5 days, then repeated a few months later. Experts on this forum, feel free to correct me if I got that wrong!)

I'm not kicking myself too much for the decision, though, since I do feel like I got the biggest piece right -- I got the RT quickly, before the disease had a chance to progress too much. As others on this forum have said, I'd hate to see the shape my hands would be in now if I hadn't gotten the treatment. And, like so many of us, I had to make the decision very quickly, with little information and a (to me) shocking lack of assistance and unbiased guidance from the medical establishment.

If I do go to Hamburg, it will probably be in the next few weeks (if I can get an appointment that soon). I want to do this as quickly as possible before this thing gets too much of a chance to grow again.

If anyone else is in town at the same time it would be fun to meet up!

Hi Spanishbuddha and Maddie

Spanishbuddha - all the best for your treatment next week! Let us know how you go. I was originally going this week, but had to reschedule due to unexpected work commitments, so apologies for my delay in responding while I confirmed the timing. It's been a bit stressful as the nodules are growing in front of my eyes and I think I'm seeing the start of a second one next the the original one on one foot.

I'd be interested in hearing about accommodation tips and good places to see. Are you planning to stay in Hamburg, or travel a bit more widely? I hear you can do day trips to other cities on the ICE trains.

Maddie - once I confirm, I'll let you know in case we cross paths. When you make a firm decision, we could have some fun swapping ideas about what to do while in Hamburg.

I'll look forward to comparing experiences with both of you !

Di

Re: Going to Germany for RT!

Hi Cyclist and Maddie

I read the experiences recorded here http://www.dupuytren-online.info/Roger_Hamburg_RT.HTML and made similar plans. I will stay in a hotel close to the clinic and use the excellent train and metro system of Hamburg to make a holiday of the trip when not being treated. My Kindle is loaded, flights and hotel booked, and the only thing I'm fretting over is what to wear on my feet. I expect to do a bit of walking sightseeing, and with PF my feet get sore in just about everything except Fitflop sandals which are not ideal in cold damp wet weather.

Edit to add: any readers from Hamburg know where I can practise piano whilst there, just once or twice, that would be really nice. If not I'll have to visit Steinway and pretend I'm thinking of buying one. :-)

Hi spanishbuddha
If you wear sandals in the UK winter, couldn't you do the same in Germany? Have I missed a vital piece of information?! Don't your feet get cold in them at home!! Pardon my ignorance, winter seems so far away from where I'm sitting!

I think I'll be staying in a self-contained accommodation in the city. Staying in a studio with a kitchenette means I can prepare most of my meals and not have to rely on eating out too much. I like to eat healthy food and am a little fussy! Maybe I'll find some bikes to hire and have a look around AND do my favourite exercise activity at the same time

I thought I'd try and book my appointments in the afternoons so I can do my breakfast whenever I wake up, find some good coffee house somewhere and spend the rest of the day exploring the city before having the treatment. That way I might feel well rested when I travel the 25-30 hour trip back home!

I forgot to ask the Prof about how much time I can spend on my feet during the treatment... did you manage to extract this information?

All the best
Di

Hi Larry
Thanks for this - it's very thoughtful of you. I will explore your links over the next week or two. Do you know much about bike hire in Hamburg city?

Re: Going to Germany for RT!

Larry

Thanks for the links, I will check them out. I'm a summer cyclist so will give that a miss next week :-) But there are tennis courts near the clinic, and I'm an all seasons tennis player.

Cyclist

About the sandals, I only wear them indoors at home in winter. Thankfully I'm not usually on my feet that much non-stop standing and walking, but when I am for more than a couple of hours with normal shoes it becomes a problem. Strangely I don't have a problem jogging or playing tennis, even playing more than a couple of hours, so I converted a pair of my tennis shoes into day shoes (painted them black) but it didn't solve the problem - so it's something to do with the different dynamic of walking or standing, I think. Oddly enough today I saw an elderly man wearing sandals outdoors, with socks on which is considered by the fashion purists a no-no, but I bet he didn't care. I think Hamburg might be too cold for that in February.

I don't think I will be having RT on my feet as I don't think I have LD. Yet!?
