No medical ins because of DD

I have been driving myself crazy trying to get medical ins. and so far i have tried with 3 ins. companies and they have turned me down because of my hands. Two declined me and one put me at high risk which was $5000 deduct and around $700 a month. What is going on? I had ins. with coventry and they paid for my RT. but now they have declined me for DD. Is anyone else having this type of a problem? Don't know who to apply with now.

I can't believe no one else is having this problem. I'm getting ready to try AARP and hope i have some luck with them for medical ins. I wish this disease would just go away.

We all need to keep working on this 'cause I don't think this disease is going to go away

Glad you're keeping on trying. Any breakthrough that is made will help us all.

Re: No medical ins because of DD

I've no private insurance coverage for my DD. I've both private and NHS insurance in the UK. The UK private insurance excludes DD, and likely Ledderhose. I do have NHS and have begun the process for my next surgery through the public insurance.

Back in the US I am not covered, so my treatments are on my own. I recently paided 3250$ for xiaflex, in the US. My out of pocket payment is still cheaper than the insurance and deductible I could get in the US. The only US ins. quote I could get was Aetna, 275$/month, and 5000 deductable, and with this "deal" contingent upon my being out of the US 9 months a year. When out of the country I would not be covered by Aetna, but the payments would continue for all 12 months. So.... that's about 8300$/ year of payment to the insurance company should I chose an annual treatment in the US.

Perhaps some of your treatments are cheaper out of pocket than through the insurance company?

Re: No medical ins because of DD

Richardt, you may be right about our of pocket payments, specifically if nothing else is pending. And you might consider NA an alternative to collagenase. NA may not be better than collagenase but typically it is much cheaper.

Re: No medical ins because of DD

Cindy,

I have BCBS insurance and am considered top tier. Meaning I am not high risk and will get "supposedly the best rates". I have a $2500.00 deductible and pay close to $600/month. I don't know how old you are but I wlll be 56 this year. I have owned my own insurance since 1995. Unfortunately what you are being quoted is fairly typical for individuals in North Carolina. My husband has the same deductible and pays close to $700.00/month, is 59, and has 1 rider on his plan. I thought with Obamacare that if you owned your own plan the pre-existing condition rider was eliminated?

Re: No medical ins because of DD

Cindy, does your state have a high-risk pool? That's how my husband has his insurance, as he is considered "un-insurable" by the commercial industry. His is expensive, but the state offers rebates for anyone at 400% or less of the poverty level. Check into it. Here, at least, being declined by a commercial company is all you need to be eligible.

Lori, I think the provisions you are talking about in the health care reform bill go into effect in 2014. There's probably a grandfather clause in there too- if you currently have exclusions they can keep those in. Of course, if the current congress, courts, etc., overturn the whole thing we're all out on the street with our pathetic little curled-up hands . . .

Re: No medical ins because of DD

Insurance Companies are nasty. Have you tried Aetna? They recommend RT .....

I am with Kaiser and I am hoping they will pick up the tab for RT... Often, IF you can pay the medical treatment in a timely fashion, there is a discount....30% at Palo Alto.

Amazing how little is known about DC (and how cavalier the medical world is about it)!!!!!

I asked my surgeon at Kaiser Santa Teresa about RT and he said that Kaiser won't touch it until it has been proven to be effective. He said that so far Kaiser has seen no evidence that it works well enough for them to endorse it. If you find a Kaiser location that will cover it, let us all know!
