post surgery

Hi everybody.

I had my stitches removed today, 2 weeks after surgery for palmar fibromatosis (left hand, pinkie & ring fingers).

I hadn't been given much of any post surgery advise regarding exercises (I did ask and was told to slowly increase finger movement each day, basically) or wound care so I took to the web and found this group.
My surgery took ~ 3 hrs. and I believe everything went well.

My thoughts now are to apply vitamin E oil (28,000 IU) to the scar and cover with surgical tape.
After a few days perhaps I should start applying moisturizer to promote skin flexibility ?

I'll keep poking around this site for answers.

Thx in advance for any thoughts or advise anyone here has to offer.

Randolph

Re: post surgery

This image taken from Google images after searching with hand exercises after surgery, was also given to patients on one of the FB groups after surgery. https://i.stack.imgur.com/T48We.png

Suggestions on here are to rub moisturiser or vitamin e oil or similiar on the scar to keep it moist, do exercises (normally recommended by OT) but not overdo them.

Re: post surgery

After stitches were removed I was recommended rubbing in a creme that reduces scarring. I am sure there are many such cremes, the one I was recommended was Contractubex. Whether it made much difference is difficult to tell. In any case it did well to softly massage the scars and keep them soft and mobile. Of course, you would do that only after the wounds have healed. Occasionally soaking the hand in warm water for 5-10 minutes was also helping a little. Besides that a physiotherapist regularly massaged my hand. Otherwise I was told to use my hand without overdoing it and flex it often to regain flexibility. After the scars had fully healed I started pressing a rubber ball to regain strength in my fingers. Otherwise nothing was recommended by my surgeon and all worked out well, although in my case it took nearly 1/2 year until the swelling had diasappeared (but that's fairly unusual).
