Radiotherapy in Massachusetts. Different from the German protocol???

Just called Dr Delaney's office about some info for radiotherapy. I got his name from the list of doctors on this website that offer this service. The also said that Dr Chan does this along with Dr Delaney. I have not yet had a consultation with them yet. They want to see the report from the hand doctor first to see if I am a possible candidate.

But I asked if they follow the German protocol for the radiation therapy. She said they used to do the 5 days of radiation, wait 6 weeks, and then do another 5 days.

But now they do 7 days in a row of radiation and that is all. The lady on the phone said that there has been some published research on this method. [b]I am just curious if anyone else has heard of this???

She also said that they do get lots of calls from people about radiation therapy for Dupuytrens. But not everyone is eligible. So I asked how many of these have they done. She said they do 2-3 a month.

Again I have not talked to the doctor yet. Just the person on the phone.

Thanks,
Derek

Re: Radiotherapy in Massachusetts. Different from the German protocol???

I had a consultation with a radiologist at Loma Linda Univesity Medical Center regarding RT for my Dupuytren's. I specifically asked him what protocol he would use and why. He said they use 3 x 7 days based research. He specifically noted a study that used random samplings, The random study he says is the highest standard of research. (I think I'm using these terms correctly.) He said this protocol showed better longer term results. He was very familiar with the German protocol but prefers the 3 x 7 for the above reasons.

I will be going to LLUMC if I have to have RT on my other hand.

Re: Radiotherapy in Massachusetts. Different from the German protocol???

The GERMAN PROTOCOL - which is the only randomized study for Dupuytren - was initiated and performed by Prof. Seegenschmiedt, who worked initially at the University of ERlangen ( and started Dupuytren's research there), then became Chairman in Essen and works now in Hamburg in his own clinic (Strahlenzentrum Hamburg). He started and finished the randomized study which compared CONTROL (no treatment), 7 times 3Gy within 2 ( !!!) weeks (only 3 treatments per week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday over 15 days, e.g. Monday thru Monday) and 10 times 3Gy splitted into 2 series of each 5 times 3Gy with a break of 8 to 12 weeks (NOT 6 weeks).

Prof. Seegenschmiedt reported his results at the Miami conference in 2010 and his results are now published in the NEW BOOK which he co-edited together with EATON and others.

In SUMMARY: the best results are achieved with 10 x 3Gy in 2 series but 7 x 3Gy is better than control but causes slightly more accute skin reactions and is also less effective tha the 10 x 3Gy protocol.

I have been treated by Prof. Seegenschmiedt in 2 RT-Series of each 5 x 3Gy and I also ow him the relief of pain and gain of function in both my feet a few years ago, when I had a very active Ledderhose Disease.

So it's important to know the original GERMAN PROTOCOL before claiming to do ist ! Good luck, Larry
