skin treatment after RT

I would like advice on what cream/lotion to use after RT treatment. I had RT for breast cancer 10 years ago and used Aloe Vera gel immediately after treatment which was great, I had no soreness or redness and my skin is fine (I found E45 no good at all). However I have been reading that Aloe Vera encourages the growth of collagen which is not desirable for Dupuytrens. But can any cream or lotion really penetrate skin any further than just the top layer? Surely it would not be possible for it to get down to the level of the Dupuytrens nodules?
Also what cream in general would be good for any long term dry skin problems?
I'd be very glad of any advice.

Re: skin treatment after RT

I recently had radiotherapy for the Ledderhose in my feet. Although I have not actually suffered from any dryness or redness though it has gotten slightly tanned, I was advised that should this happen the only thing they recommend to use is E45.

I am not sure why this is the case exactly, I remember it being mentioned that it was no perfume, no alcohol and things like that.

Afraid that is all the advice I can give and remember that the total dose used here is lower than used for cancer treatment so you might find that you do not suffer too much from dry skin this time.

Good luck,

Gary

Re: skin treatment after RT

Not sure of the availability where you live, but I use 'Lotil' for the fingers in winter, and 'Gormel' with 20% urea on the radiated area when it's really dried out.

Re: skin treatment after RT

I experienced no skin dryness or redness after the XRT. I did experience an increased sensitivity to the sun immediately afterwards and so wore gloves while bicycling for the first week.

Dr. Siegenschmiedt recommended using a lotion with at least 10% Urea as this helps it to penetrate the cell walls and provide the most benefit. I have had very little luck finding lotion with 10% Urea in Germany or the USA in stores and most people working in the pharmacies are clueless about such matters.

Eucerin makes a 10% Urea lotion but I have only found the Urea containing version one time. The best lotion I have found that has 10% Urea and penetrates very well and leaves no oily residue is Aqua Care lotion. I buy it online in a 3-pack of 8 0z. pump bottles. It is a great product and you can save a lot buying it online.

Re: skin treatment after RT

That'S what Prof Seegenschmiedt recommended to me: about 200ml lotion ~ 12 Euro

I use it before going to sleep and in the morning after showering ... Larry

Re: skin treatment after RT

My hands were very dry after RT and I used Mary Kay's Extra Emolient Night Cream. Usually this makes my skin oily, but after RT, it seemed to just be absorbed into the skin. I'm glad to know about the cream with Urea in it. I will try it this time. I start my second round of RT on Tuesday, Sept.25.

Re: skin treatment after RT

At the Rt center they gave me a cream called Radiogel to put on the area that was being treated and it was great. I would ask them for a cream, I imagine they would either be able to give you one, a sample or with their vast experince a recommendation.

Re: skin treatment after RT

None of my RT has caused skin problems. The doctor today looked specifically how my skin looked and commented that my skin tolerated the RT quite well. I asked what to use if dryness shows up. They recommend aloe vera for radiation damages skin after radiation on other areas like breast.

My skin is naturally DRY, DRY, DRY. It's slightly rosy after just finishing RT, but I can't tell any difference in how my hand feels compared to nonradiated areas of my palm.
